Serbia has a new national Alzheimer’s society

The Serbian Society for Alzheimer’s Disease (SUAB) was recently formed, with the main aim of improving the quality of life of people with dementia and their families in Serbia.

Experienced health care professionals in the field of neurology and psychiatry, experts in the field of social protection of adults and older persons and informal caretakers with experience in caring for people with some form of dementia came together to found this new association.

They hope to achieve a number of goals in the areas of social and health care, increase social inclusion and exercise the human rights of people with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and all other types of dementia and their families.

The head office of the Association is in Belgrade, but it is also active in Novi Sad, Niš, and Vršac. At the moment, it has 14 members of which five informal carers. It also has 10 volunteers.

They are currently piloting the day-care centre service in Belgrade in cooperation with the Association of Citizens Amity, along with the Counselling service for the informal carers in Belgrade.

The association plans to:

• support and advocate for reforms of the social and health care policies and programmes aimed at persons living with AD and other dementia and their families, as well as the people at risk
• develop missing community-based services for persons with dementia and their informal carers
• carry out capacity-building of both institutional professionals and NGO activities, working with the target group
• support and carry out capacity building of informal caregivers of the people with AD and other dementia types
• raise public awareness on the importance of prevention of dementia
• include people with mild cognitive disorders into the programme and policy proposal drafting.

The SUAB is a membership-based type of organization welcoming all people sharing the common purpose of supporting people with Alzheimer’s disease and all other types of dementia and their families, in accordance with the Articles of the Association.

Srbija ima novo nacionalno udruženje za Alchajmerovu bolest

Nedavno je formirano Srpsko društvo za Alchajmerovu bolest (SUAB) sa osnovnim ciljem da unapredi kvalitet života osoba sa demencijom I njihovih porodica u Srbiji.

Iskusni stručnjaci iz oblasti neurologije i psihijatrije, stručnjaci iz oblasti socijalne zaštite odraslih i starijih osoba i neformalni negovatelji sa iskustvom u nezi osoba sa nekim oblikom demencije, okuili su se da bi osnovali ovo novo udruženje.

Nadaju se da će postići niz ciljeva u oblastima socijalne i zdravstvene zaštite, povećanja socijalne uključenosti i ostvarivanja ljudskih prava osoba sa Alchajmerovom bolešću (AB) i svim drugim vrstama demencije i njihovih porodica.

Sedište Udruženja je u Beogradu, ali je aktivno i u Novom Sadu, Nišu i Vršcu. Trenutno broji 14 članova od kojih su pet neformalni negovatelji. Takođe ima 10 volontera.

Trenutno pilotiraju uslugu dnevnog centra u Beogradu u saradnji sa Udruženjem građana Amity, kao i Savetovalište za neformalne negovatelje u Beogradu.

Planovi udruženja su:

• podržavanje i zagovaranje reformi politika i programa u oviru socijalne i zdravstvene zaštite usmerene ka osobama sa AB i drugim vrstama demencije i njihovim porodicama, kao i ka osobama u riziku
•  razvijanje nedostajućih usluga u zajednici za osobe sa demencijom i njihove neformalne negovatelje
• izgradnja kapaciteta kako stručnjaka u institucijama, tako i aktivnosti NVO, koji se bave ciljnom grupom
• podržavanje i rad na izgradnji kapaciteta neformalnih negovatelja osoba sa AB i drugim vrstama demencije
• podizanje svesti javnosti o značaju prevencije demencije
• uključivanje osoba sa blagim kognitivnim oštećenjem u izradu predloga programa i politika.

SUAB je udruženje na bazi učlanjenja i prihvata sve ljude koji dele zajednički cilj da se podrže osobe sa Alchajmerovom bolešću i svim drugim vrstama demencije i njihove porodice, u skladu sa Statutom udruženja.
